Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Hasalaka Rathna-Ella irrigation scheme, the Minister said most farmers still employ traditional farming methods and therefore efficiency and profitability is not satisfactory.

The irrigation scheme costing Rs. 5 million was provided by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water management.

The irrigation scheme will provide water for over 200 families and water for over 500 acres of paddy and alternate crop cultivation during Yala and Maha seasons. Attanayake observed that due to forest clearing and various other reasons, catchment areas are drying up.

Therefore available water resources should be well managed and used carefully, he said.
