Duty evasion attempt by NGO foiled

by Manjula Fernando

A brand new Toyota Land Cruiser jeep imported by a leading Non Governmental Organisation was detained by the Customs recently after it was revealed that the NGO had attempted to evade government tax through a false declaration, inside sources told the Daily News yesterday.

The NGO has declared the luxury vehicle worth Rs.6 million as an 'ambulance' to evade the costs of Customs clearance which amounted to 3.1 million.

He said they have made this false declaration despite a duty concession of about Rs.1 million by the Finance Ministry considering their humanitarian work in the country. The vehicle has been donated by a foreign NGO.

The detection was made by Assistant Director Malie Piyasena and Superintendents N. Wasalatilleke and Kapila Ruwan Pathirana.
