An awards ceremony organised by the SAARC Women's Association to recognise and facilitate women who have contributed to the society in cultural activities, media and community service will be held on October 25 at 6.30 p.m. at the Russian Cultural Centre. Appeal Court Judge, Shirani Thilakawardena will be the chief guest. This is the second time the awards ceremony is being organised by the SAARC Women's Association. Saeeda Mandviwala from Karachi, founder of the SAARC Women's Association founded the Sri Lanka Chapter of SAARC Women's Association in January 1997. Eleven members were enrolled at this meeting. There are members from Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka at present. SAARC Women's Association, Colombo strengthens cultural ties between SAARC Chapters observe all national festivals, arrange talks on traditions and cultural significance, encourage members to organise an annual activity which would enhance status of association in the country and invite SAARC Chapters to interact with our Chapter. The SAARC Women's Association has held many programmes which include a pageant of traditional attire and jewellery of brides in SAARC countries, a short story writers' contest for women in three national languages, SAARC Day, award of excellence for women achievers who excelled in cultural, business and civic activity and a South Asian charity bazaar. |
