SLANE children's art and essay competitions

The Sri Lanka Association of New England (SLANE) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Embassy in the USA the Sri Lanka High Commission in Canada, and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, will conduct an international children's art and essay competition on "Peace in Sri Lanka". All selected art entries will be exhibited at an art and cultural show scheduled for Saturday, February 8th, 2003 at the Lincoln School in Providence, Rhode Island shortly after Sri Lanka's Independence Day.

These events are being planned in conjunction with SLANE's 'Discover Sri Lanka' program that was launched in February 2000, as an opportunity for the Sri Lankan children in New England to learn and cherish the rich history and culture of Sri Lanka.

The art and essay competitions, the art exhibition and the cultural show are an effort to generate momentum on peace initiatives by the Sri Lankan government and to facilitate children to express their feelings through art and writing.

The art exhibition will also be held in Massachusetts and other venues in the US and Canada. The essay competition will be conducted in English, Sinhala and Tamil. Winning essay entries will be published and made available to attendees at all exhibitions. We plan to offer attractive gifts such as Computers, for the first place winners in each category of both competitions.

SLANE incorporated as a non-profit organization was established in September 1998. SLANE with a diversified and well-balanced multi-ethnic membership spreading across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont in USA, is one of the few Sri Lankan organizations in the US to bring all Sri Lankans together, irrespective of their ethnicity and religion.

SLANE extends an invitation to all children in Sri Lanka and to the children living in all parts of the globe to join this competition. Please visit us at our web sit: www.slaneusa.com or www.discoversrilanka.org for details, guidelines and applications. Applications will also be available at all major schools in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Embassy in US, Sri Lanka High Commission in Canada, Sri Lanka Consulate General in Toronto, Canada and published in Newspapers and other media.
