Road Development Project first phase at Malabe

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The first phase of the road development project will be implemented at a cost of Rs. 40 million at the Malabe junction along the new Colombo-Kandy highway, Cultural Affairs Division spokesperson said.

This will ease traffic congestion along the highway. Special discussions were held at the Defence Ministry auditorium with the participation of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku and Defence, Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation Minister Tilak Marapana to set up the project, the spokesperson said.

More funds will be allocated for the project during the second and third phases. The number of houses to be demolished to construct the new outer circular express highway will be minimised. State or private lands will be provided from the same area for families who loose their lands for this project.

The new Colombo - Kandy road will be divided into three lanes at the Malabe junction and two will be allocated for Colombo bound vehicles in the morning and Kandy bound vehicles in the evening. Udawatta Road, Koswatta-Ambagaha Junction Road, Talawatugoda-Hokandara Road and Aturugiriya-Pittugala Road will be widened.

Koswatta-Malabe Road will be widened up to 32 feet. A new road will be constructed between the Parliament roundabout and Ambagaha junction. The low level road from Kaduwela to Hanwella will be widened. A new three-wheeler parking area will be constructed in the space between the bus stand and the main road.

The roundabout at the Malabe junction will be reduced and roads will be widened. The road between Malabe junction and Pelawatta will be given a face-lift to use it as an alternate road. Bus-halts will be relocated outside the main road. Route number 170 and 190 busses will be diverted along new road behind Malabe bus stand.
