Danish help to train policemen

Police officers of several key grades will be provided extensive training and education in crime management and prevention of violation of human rights under a special programme to be carried out with Danish assistance.

The programme initiated by Interior Minister John Amaratunga is to be carried out during 10 months commencing November 2002 through the Center for the Study of Human Rights of the University of Colombo.

An agreement will be signed between Michael Sternberg, Ambassador of the Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi and the Head of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights, University of Colombo today. Minister Amaratunga, Secretary M. N. Junaid and Inspector General of Police T. E. Anandarajah will be present.

Under the agreement, the Danish Government will provide Rs. 6,223,525 to the Center for Human Rights, University of Colombo which will carry out the training programme a media release issued by the Ministry of Interior staffed.

A total of 570 police officers are to be trained on human rights and crime management. Senior police Officers, Criminal Investigations Department personnel, officers in charge of police stations, women police officers and officers serving in the North and East are among the officers to be trained it said.
