President condemns Bali bomb attack

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a message of grief to her Indonesian counterpart Megawati Soekarnopuri said:

"I am deeply shocked and dismayed at the unprecedented attack at a night club in Indonesia on the evening of October 12 resulting in loss of innocent lives, injury and destruction of property.

"The Government and the people of Sri Lanka join me in unreservedly condemning this dastardly attack which involved nationals of several countries. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of the victims.

"Acts of terrorism cannot be condoned under any circumstances whatsoever. We condemn in the strongest possible terms these acts of wanton destruction which cannot be tolerated by civilised society. I am convinced more than ever that all governments and peoples must unite to eradicate this scourge of terrorism which respects no boundaries, nor states large or small. The perpetrators of such acts should be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice".

In a separate message to Australian Prime Minister John Howard the President said she was deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the bomb explosion in Bali, Indonesia in which a large number of Australian nationals were killed and injured.

The Government and the people of Sri Lanka and I strongly condemn this wanton, barbaric attack on innocent people who were holidaying in Bali.

I wish to convey our profound condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and bereaved family members of the victims.

This dastardly attack which has triggered a wave of revulsion and outrage the world over has brought into focus the need to act swiftly and resolutely against the global menace of terrorism, the message adds.
