Lake House plants jak saplings to mark tree planting campaign

Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd's (ANCL) National Jak Development Project (NJDP) participated in the National Tree Planting Campaign which fell on Tuesday by planting two jak saplings opposite Lake House contributing to the NJDP's motto of planting jak to free the starving.

Planting jak saplings on Tuesday was a special effort of ANCL and was participated by Colombo Deputy Mayor Azad Sali, ANCL Chairman Nalin Ladduwahetty and Additional Secretary, Environment and Natural Resources Ministry, Sunil Sarath Perera. Besides publishing newspapers, ANCL launched the NJDP as a national service and will target the planting of one lakh of jak saplings. Eight phases of this project has been completed by planting jak saplings in schools, places of worship and public venues.

Addressing the function, Editorial and Marketing Director (ANCL) and Founder Chairman of the NJDP Bandula Padmakumara said the project was launched to assist in the establishment of a stable society and has been popularised islandwide. Tuesday's special effort was a contribution to the National Tree Planting Campaign. Padmakumara urged the protection of jak saplings planted under the project. NDJP's Phase 9 and the third phase of the schools' tree planting campaign will take place today at the Kotte Sri Jayawardhanapura Vidyalaya school.

NJDP's Phase 10 will be launched at Deraniyagala Siri Saman School on October 19, sponsored by the Samurdhi Ministry. Twenty jak saplings will be planted and 500 plants will be distributed among villagers. Environment and Natural Resources Minister, Rukman Senanayake, Samurdhi Minister, R. A. D. Sirisena, ANCL Chairman and officials and NJDP and Sevana Lottery officials will participate.

The school can be reached by travelling on the Deraniyagala-Dehiowita Road, turning by the Deraniyagala Police Station and travelling a further 100 metres.
