STC take Abeynaike trophy for 3rd year

S. Thomas' in their traditional hockey encounter against Royal won the Abeynaike Memorial Trophy for the third successive your at the Astro Turf, Reid Avenue beating Royal by 3 goals to nil.

Both S. Thomas' and Royal made inroads to each others territory but lacked to put the finishing touches to their moves to score with the Royal goalie Jayaprakash, defending well for the score to read nil-all at half-time.

Thomians dominated play in the second half with the centre-half Pujitha Walpitagama ably supported by the insides K. L. R. Wijesinghe and D. S. Panawanage to give an impressive display to score twice. The first goal was shot by right extreme J. G. Swaris to put the Thomians on the offensive. For the Royalists the extremes R. Mallikarachchi and V. S. Gallage, with skipper P. M. Somapala strove hard to keep the Thomians at bay. The chief guest at the match was former Royal cricket captain and hockey player Nanda Senanayake.
