CR-CH clash in under-21 rugby final

A close tussle for supremacy can be expected today when defending champions Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club clash with the Colombo Hockey and Football Club in the final of the Cup Championship of the under-21 rugby tournament at Havelock Park at 5.00 p.m.

CR and FC entered the final by beating Old Zahirians (42-7) and Ruhunu RFC (10-5) in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively while CH and FC beat Old Nalandians (60-0) and Havelocks (26-13) on their way to the finals.

Up front a terrific tussle for supremacy can be expected with CR's Steve Perera, Pujitha Jayakody, Suren Mendis, Channa de Silva, Prasad and Barry being confronted by equally good forwards in Batepola, Dushanth Lewke, Mafaz Ismail, Kushan Athukorale, Thalagalarachchi and Jayan Gunatilleke. In the line outs the CH duo of Batepola and Lewke have the edge over CR's Barry and Darshana while the set scrums should be shared between CH's Mafaz Ismail and CR's Perera.

If the CH halves combination of R. Ishak and Ishan Perera clicks then CH should make maximum use of the good ball that comes their way as they have two hard running centres in Harshana Wijeweera and Rukshan Wijesinghe with full back Danushka Pushpakumara joining the line to form the overlap.

The Red Shirts too have a fine set of three quarters. If the halves combination of Zulki Hamid and Roshan Peiris hits it off smoothly they could breach the CH defence as they have two hard running centres in Haren Kaluarachchi and Dilan Abeygunawardena in addition to two superb wingers in Kodagoda and Roshan Cooke.

The cup championship final will be preceded by the Bowl final between Jawatte Lions and Petersons at 2.30 p.m. and the Plate final between Air Force and Navy-Army combined at 3.45 p.m. at the same venue. The chief guest will be SLRFU President Commodore Harsha Mayadunne while the chairman of Air Mark Travels and Tours Mervyn Herath will be the guest of honour. Incidentally Air Mark Travels and Tours are sponsoring the under-21 tournament.

CH and FC - Venura Perera, Mafaz Ismail, Dananjaya Nonis, Prasad Batepola, Dushanth Lewke, Kushan Athukorale, Jayan Gunatilleke (captain), Asanka Thalagalarachchi, R. Ishak and Ishan Perera, Nuwan Basnayake, Harshana Wijeweera, Rukshan Wijesinghe, Dinuka Jayasinghe, Danushka Pushpakumara.
