'Japan come to study needs of North-East'

Jaffna special correspondent

Japan has been a longstanding friend and donor of Sri Lanka. We have come to study your needs and offer help to rehabilitate the North and East. Our visit is a prelude to the various projects that are to be executed by our government in the fields of agriculture, fishing, dairy farming, low cost housing and construction of agro wells.

Our grant assistance for grass root projects exceed several billions of rupees" said T. Thakuchi, the leader of the Japanese delegation that met the heads of government departments, Presidents of Cooperative Societies Unions and Agriculture Fishing and Dairy Development Societies in Jaffna at the Jaffna Secretariat. S. Pathmanathan Government Agent Jaffna presided.

Mr. Thakuchi further said that they had visited the Eastern Province and Wanni and prepared a comprehensive development plan for execution.

He said Japan is anxious to develop the Maha and Yala cultivation of paddy in Sri Lanka. The fishermen in the North and East would be granted funds to purchase fishing gear and motor boats.

The delegation visited Jaffna Teaching hospital, some leading schools, the Jaffna District Cooperative Milk Collecting centre at Thinnavely and the Jaffna Fishermen's Cooperative Societies Union.
