Oil deposits in Sri Lanka - Minister

Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya said in Parliament yesterday that studies have revealed that oil deposits are available around Sri Lanka. "We will continue with the investigation of finding such deposits", Minister said.

The minister who was making the winding up speech at the Petroleum Products (Special Provision) Bill said that the Government will not under any circumstances privatise the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. "We will continue with the Lion logo", he added. Minister said that the CPC had Rs.21 billion in debts and today it has become a profit making venture. "Today, the CPC has become an organisation which can compete with any company in the world", Minister added. (JSN/BM)

Jimmy Carter wins Nobel Peace Prize

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for working for peace and human rights around the world.

Carter won from a record field of 156 candidates vying for the prize.

Media seminar and workshop

The Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum has organised a seminar and workshop on the 'Role of media in Conflict Resolution" at Hotel Ranmuthu, Galle Road, Colombo 3 October 12th and 13th.

Rohan Edirisinghe, M.I.M. Mohideen, Segu Issadeen MP, R. Sambanthan MP, M.M. Zuhair former MP, A.M. Sameem and Shamini Boyle, Journalists will deliver lectures on these two days. Human Resources, Educational and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku will be the Chief Guest at the Certificate awarding ceremony to the participants of the announcers Training Programme conducted by the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum.

Ministers Rauf Hakeem, A.H.M. Azwer and Golam Reza Nazar Boland Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran will be the guest of Honours. President N.M. Ameen will preside. Secretary of the SLMMF F.M. Fairoos said that sixty media persons mainly from the eastern province will participate at this seminar.
