Committee to probe irregularities at CCF

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku has decided to appoint a special committee to probe the irregularities that have taken place at the Central Cultural Fund (CCF) during the previous regime, Cultural Affairs Division sources said.

The sources said that the committee will probe the large scale irregularities and corruption in different projects implemented in the Cultural Triangle during the past.

The workers attached to Anuradhapura, Jethawanaya and Abhayagiriya excavation sites had told their problems to the Minister during his recent inspection tour. About 5,000 workers are attached to different excavation sites and according to them, they were not granted any relief enjoyed by other workers.

In 1983 one brick was produced at a cost of Rs. 12.50 and about 70,000 bricks were produced per month. But in 2000 the cost of one brick had increased to Rs. 16.00 and less than 1000 bricks were produced per month. Millions of rupees have been paid for making bricks during the past few years. Officers in charge have also claimed thousands of rupees for transport expenses by involving irrelevant duties at irrelevant projects in the cultural triangle without obtaining permission from the Ministry.

The Minister promised to provide job security and relief to the workers after holding a discussion with the Treasury and also promised to probe all irregularities and corruption.
