"Cultivating proper attitudes, ideas, concepts and values through an open mind can be achieved only at early childhood", said the Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Prof. G.L. Peiris at the felicitation ceremony "Prasadhini Pranaama"."In Finding solutions to many problems faced by the society today including the ethnic conflict, proper guidance in the early childhood is rather important. That is the very reason as to why the teacher plays an important role in today's society", the minister added. The felicitation ceremony organized by Prof. G.L.Peiris Foundation was held at the Town Hall on October 6 to felicitate outstanding personalities engaged in the teaching profession in the Colombo district. The Minister explaining the current challenges said, the competition is mostly among parents than the students. "The motive is good, but at the end of it you may realize that the child has lost his childhood pleasure and happiness. Scoring higher points, entering a university, obtaining a degree,securing a good position are some of the features in this competition", said the Minister. Minister of Rural and Economy and Deputy Minister of Finance, Bandula Gunawardena said,"The respect for teachers very much prevalent then, is gradually fading away from today's generation and within universities there are some Professors and Lecturers who are more or less held prisoners by students. At the ceremony, 250 awards and certificates were presented to selected school principals and teachers in the Colombo District by Ministers G.L. Peiris, Bandula Gunawardena, National Schools Director, Mr. Geeganage, and other distinguished guests. |
