Colombo Port achieves 24.9% growth in September The Port of Colombo, which has emerged as the gateway to South Asia during the month of September, has handled 153,060 TEUs thereby recording a growth of 24.9% as against the month of September 2001. The transshipment volumes handled during the month of September 2002 was 98,743 TEUs thereby witnessing a growth of 25.7% as against the volumes handled in September 2001. The Jaye Container Terminal, the flagship terminal of the Port of Colombo is the largest container terminal in South Asia and has in the recent past established international standards in the handling of containers. The Jaye Container Terminal combined with SAGT another World Class Terminal has contributed towards the growth of the Port of Colombo. The Deputy General Manager of Star Lanka Shipping (Pvt) Limited in his letter under the Caption "Believe It or Not" dated September 30, 2002 addressed to Jaye Container Terminal has conveyed his appreciation of the record breaking performance on my "Moscow Mariner" at JCT 3 on September 28, 2002 where a total of 353 moves were achieved by the operators of Gantry No. 8 during the day shift. He has commended the team work effort of the entire operations staff at the JCT. In a bid to boost its image as the pre-eminent load center (hub) of South Asia on the advice of Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Ports Development and Shipping, Chairman, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Parakrama Dissanayake has been spearheading a programme to boost service delivery to clients. |
