765 buses fined for not issuing tickets

The Western Province Transport Authority (WPTA) has earned Rs. 215,000 during the past 10 days by fining private buses that do not issue tickets.

WPTA Chairman L.F. Perera told the Daily News that around 765 private buses in Colombo district have been fined by inspectors this month alone for not issuing tickets.

"Western Province Transport Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna last month decided to take legal action against bus crews who do not issue tickets, with effect from October 1. On the first day we turned back a large number of buses which did not issue tickets from terminals and warned them to start issuing tickets as soon as possible. A private bus can be fined Rs. 250 for not issuing tickets," he said.

The new law also enables the WPTA to fine timekeepers who neglect their duty and cancel route permits if bus owners continue to operate without issuing tickets despite warnings.

The Chairman said they hoped to enforce the law strictly from next month and stop issuing daily operations charts for such buses. "We have already distributed a model ticket among the bus owners asking them to print similar tickets," he said.
