Tertiary education and training centres to be set up - Minister Hashim

by Colombo special correspondent

Plans are under way to set up well equipped training centres for tertiary education and training in Beruwela and Mawanella with help from Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, said Minister of Tertiary Education and Training Kabir Hashim.

The minister advising youth to make use of this facility once set up, said there is ample scope for training in various professional fields.

Speaking as the chief guest at the Ceylon Baithulmal Fund (CBF) sewing school certificates awards ceremony at the H.S. Ismail Hall, he said Muslims have not shown much interest in nursing.

The minister said he knew of an individual who took to nursing and went to USA where she earned well. Hashim said she had said that there are plenty of opportunities for nurses in the US. The minister said education is the only hope for Sri Lankan Muslims to get their share in society in the future.

"We have been backward in educational achievements throughout and we have to work hard to keep abreast with other communities or we will be left behind," Hashim said.

The minister also said tertiary education does not mean going to university only.

He said he was pleased to be associated with the CBF function as he respects the founding fathers and executive committee members who perform a yeoman service.

CBF President Justice M. Jameel presided.

Vice President Akram Mansoor proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of the committee and Miss Shaifana Shareef on behalf of the pupils.
