by Tharika Goonathilake Tourism will be given a further boost this month when over 70 golfers from over 15 countries tee off at the SriLankan Golf Festival from October 24 to 27 at the Victoria Golf Club, Kandy. A SriLankan Airlines destination promotion event, the Golf Festival is a major upmarket tourism promotional draw given the high spending ability of the visiting golfers and spin-offs through special excursion tours and gem promotions during the event. Golfers from Malaysia, UAE, U.K, Korea, Kuwait, Austria, Dubai, Oman, India, Doha and Kuwait will participate in the festival, SriLankan Airlines' Public Relations Manager Deshini Abeywardena said. Ten foreign golf journalists will cover the event. The Victoria Golf Club, rated among the 100 most beautiful courses in the World by the prestigious Golf Digest has hosted the tournament for the last seven years. Around 200 golfers including expatriates and locals will vie for the trophies and exciting prizes including holiday packages and airline tickets. "Participant numbers are going up partly as a result of the peace initiative. We can definitely expect more players next year," Victoria Golf Club Secretary Jannine Weeratunga told the Daily News yesterday. Weeratunga pointed out that although a considerable number of participants are 'repeats' "who have been loyal to Sri Lanka" there is growing interest in the festival. Swedish representation is high this year. SriLankan Airlines hosting the junior Golf Championship last year could have sparked interest in this year's tournament, open to both amateurs and enthusiasts with separate events for men and women, she said. This year's Golf event will also includes a gem promotion by Premadasa Holdings to showcase Sri Lanka's fame as a gem producer. |
