CID to probe power failure

by Sarath Malalasekera and Rashomi Silva

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday ordered Director, CID SP Lionel Gunatilleke to launch a full scale inquiry into Tuesday night's power blackout in a number of areas for several hours.

The DIG (CID) has deployed a special team to probe whether any political organisation was involved in the blackout.

The Director CID has directed a team to question and record statements of all persons.

Matara, Galle, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Nuwara-Eliya, Badulla and several areas in Colombo South were plunged into darkness with some areas affected for several hours.

Meanwhile CEB Additional General Manager Ranjith Fonseka told the Daily News that the CEB is cooperating with the CID.

"While the CID is probing the incident, the CEB is looking into the incident from a technical point of view. There had been a disturbance in the distribution system. It is still premature to say the exact cause", he said.

Fonseka said on Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya's direction, the CEB will renovate and upgrade power system in Laksapana and major loading system in Kolonnawa.
