Pakistan trail by 257 v Australia

COLOMBO, Friday (Reuters) Australia took command of the second test against Pakistan on Friday, although a late fightback by Faisal Iqbal and Rashid Latif left the "home" side on course to avoid the follow-on.

After losing their last five wickets for 14 runs to post a total of 467, Australia tore into the Pakistan top order to leave them reeling at 116 for five.

However, with the follow-on target of 268 looking a long way off, Faisal and Rashid produced an unbeaten partnership of 94 in just 84 balls as Pakistan recovered to 210 for five when play ended early because of bad light.

Faisal ended the day on 78 not out, the best score of his short test career, with Rashid unbeaten on 30. Their runs were much-needed after Australia's bowlers had quickly made amends for their earlier batting failures.

Glenn McGrath trapped Imran Nazir lbw for nought in his first over and Jason Gillespie, with his first ball, had Taufeeq Umar caught by Ponting at first slip for another duck.

Shane Warne then chipped in with the wickets of Abdur Razzaq and Misbah-ul-Haq while Brett Lee got Younis Khan, who had resisted well for 58.
