Waterpolo Battle of the Blues on October 5

The 11th annual waterpolo encounter between S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia and Royal College, Colombo for the Dr. R. L. Hayman Trophy will be played on the same lines as the Bradby Shield. The first leg will be held on Saturday 5th October, 2002 at 4.30 p.m. at the Royal College pool.

The return leg will be played on Friday 11th October, 2002 at 5.30 p.m. at the S. Thomas' College pool. The team with the highest aggregate score after both matches will receive the coveted trophy which has been in the hands of the Thomians since its inception in 1992.

Dr. R. L. Hayman was a Sub Warden of S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia and apart from his contributions towards the education of Thomians he played an enormous role in the introduction and the fostering of aquatic sports at S. Thomas'. It is as a result of his generosity that STC was bestowed with a swimming pool. Therefore it is fitting that S. Thomas' and Royal meet in the water each year to challenge each other for a trophy named after him.

From its small beginnings nine years ago the Hayman has grown to become an important event in the calendars of both schools, this is evident in the large numbers of Thomians and Royalists both present and past attending both legs of the tournament. Apart from its implications in the relationships and traditions between these two great schools in the water polo fraternity, the Hayman stands proud.

This is as a result of it being the most competitive tournament played every year.

No other water polo match can surpass the Hayman in the level of competition, player commitment, crowd interest or tradition.

Both teams have practised hard throughout the year and the match on Saturday will culminate the year and unsurprisingly both teams will want to end it with glory; victoriously. In the midst of all the competition one needs to remember certain fundamentals of sport and especially those involving Royal and S. Thomas' i.e. to play and compete in healthy rivalry.

However the Thomians have a definite edge over their arch rivals. This season both teams met on three occasions and the experienced Thomian team led by fourth year coloursman Wayne de Silva emerged victorious comfortably on each account.

Whatever it is an exciting game is expected. If the Royalists can hold the Thomians in the first leg they would have done the needful but the school by the sea will go all out to gain a good lead and capitalise on it at the second leg.

The under-15 encounter for the RCUAC Challenge Shield will be played prior to the Dr. R. L. Hayman Trophy matches.

Thomian team: Wayne de Silva (Capt), Dilhan de Silva, Thanura Abeywardena, Rajiv Nagaraja, Lakshitha Kosgodage, Julian Joseph, Nishantha Fernando, Lasitha Perera, Dhanushka Saram, Dilshan Fernando, Dhakshita Thamanegama, Dilan Perera, Zafar Zainudeen. Coach: Nawaff Mubarak.
