NPC expresses concern over detention of soldiers

The National Peace Council of Sri Lanka has expressed concern over the detention of seven Sri Lankan soldiers by the LTTE in a disputed territory which followed the arrest of two LTTE cadres by the police in Tricomalee.

The release of detainees by the government and LTTE shortly after the initial round of peace talks in Thailand is symbolic of the positive manner in which the overall peace process is taking shape, the Council said in a press release yesterday.

However, these have been incidents on the ground that give cause for concern. These incidents stem from continuing efforts by the parties to the conflict to unilaterally resolve problems outside of the peace process that was mutually agreed on by them with Norwegian facilitation.

They have also called this act a tit-for-tat response.

The Council also expressed concern over the storming of the Valachchenai police station by schoolchildren and adults demanding the opening of the main road.
