Japanese Crown Prince hails peace process

Minister Professor G.L. Peiris with the Crown Prince of Japan, Naruhito

The Crown Prince of Japan, Naruhito has congratulated the government on the successful completion of the first round of talks with the LTTE in Thailand and conveyed his felicitations for the success of the peace process.

He showed great interest in the planning and implementation of the peace process when he received Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of Constitutional Affairs, Investment Promotion and Enterprise Development and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's special envoy at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Thursday.

The Minister briefed him in detail about the sequence of events and said that the principal reason for success was the gradual approach adopted by the Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.

The Minister told the Crown Prince that he was leading a delegation to participate in a series of events in connection with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan. He also said that Japan was one of Sri Lanka's largest trading partners and that 45% of all foreign assistance to Sri Lanka comes from Japan.

Prof. G. L. Peiris represented Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando and delivered the message on behalf of him. "I believe time has come for both countries to take active steps towards further strengthening of ties between our two countries, so that the future generations will enjoy the fruits of this wonderful friendship", the Minister said in the message.

The Minister was accompanied by Mr. Karunatillaka Amunugama, Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Japan.
