Census on disabled, handicapped youths

by Maharagama special correspondent

The National Youth Services Council will get a census of all disabled and handicapped youths in the country.

A census application has been sent to the district officers of the NYSC to collect data of disabled youths between 13 and 35.

This will be done in Grama Niladhari division level through the youth service officers attached to all provincial secretariat divisions.

All data must be collected before the end of this year.

Several development programmes will be introduced for the betterment of the disabled youth from 2002. Though they are disabled they also must have the same rights in the society as ordinary people, a National Youth Services Council spokesman said.

"There are about 30,000 disabled soldiers and forces personnel who fought for the country in the North and East. It is our responsibility to look after them and to provide them with facilities from 2003, the NYSC will introduce several programmes to develop the economic standards of disabled youths," Social and NYSC Chairman and Director General, Sunil Jayaweera said.
