Accidents on the rise in Kalutara

There has been an increase in accidents in the six months of 2002 compared with 2001, statistics of the SP office of Kalutara division revealed.

In 2001, there were 682 accidents in Kalutara division and 54 fatal accidents, while in the six months of 2002, there were 1,247 road accidents and 30 fatal accidents.

A total of 47 persons died in accidents in the six months last year, but decreased to 32 this year.

There were 12,377 road accidents cases filed last year. In the past six months, accidents had reduced to 12,272.

A total of 10,587 persons had paid fines last year.

Police had collected Rs. 1,361,000 as fines in the last six months of 2001. The fines increased to Rs. 1,789,060 in 2002.

ASP Jayantha Kulatillaka told the Daily News 2,255 traffic violation cases were filed but this year it reduced to 2,218.
