by Rashomi Silva The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is optimisitic that power cuts will be a thing of the past. The CEB will raise its professionalism to ensure an all round power supply, acting CEB Chairman M. Zubair told the Daily News yesterday. He said a private power plant in Kelani Tissa with a capacity of 165Mw will be available later this year or early next year. "We manage resources well planned and professionally", Zubair said. He said the thermal power generating capacity has increased significantly compared to last year. The CEB has purchased power from private thermal power plants which further increased the grid capacity. However water level has gone down in the hydroelectric reservoirs despite rains in catchment areas. The total storage has dropped to 38 per cent. "We do not depend solely on hydro power therefore another power crisis is very remote," a CEB spokesperson said. Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department said the weather is very satisfactory compared to the previous year."The inter monsoonal rains have already activated we are expecting more rains in the coming weeks. the Department said. |
