Object to train males for foreign jobs - Labour Minister

by Trincomalee correspondent

Minister of Employment and Labour Mahinda Samarasinghe participating as the chief guest at the distribution of school equipment to school children of those engaged in foreign employment held at St. Joseph's College Trincomalee conference hall said the main objective his ministry is to train and send fathers for foreign employment instead of mothers.

2,116 school children of those in foreign employment were issued with school equipment worth Rs. 2.37m by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

Mr. Samarasinghe said when mothers go abroad the children face immense difficulties and problems and in foreign countries the mothers too suffer. His ministry has not been able to train males to seek foreign employment.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment with the assistance of UNICEF is to spend Rs. 7m this year to work out a plan to safeguard the children of those in foreign employment and for this 15 Divisional Secretary divisions have already been chosen. Under this project the children's welfare education and health will be looked after. He said this project will be launched to cover the entire country in the year 2003.

A new employment policy has been prepared and presented to the Prime Minister and it is being gradually implemented. An employment centre is to be opened in Trincomalee next October. The employment centre will be computerized and suitable employment would be sought by the computer. It is also hoped to obtain the services of the private sector too.

A Vocational Training Centre is to be established to train those untrained and have no proper qualifications. Vocational Centres are to be established on district level. English language too will be taught at the Vocational Training Centres.

Minister Samarasinghe said as a result of the Prime Minister's action in signing a MoU firing of guns has ceased. He will take steps to bring permanent peace in this country.

Trincomalee district MP M. A. M. Maharoof (UNP) MKADS Gunawardhana PA and S. M. Thawfeek (SLMC) and Chairman Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment Susantha Fernando also spoke.
