Minister of Mass Communications Imthiaz Bakeer-Markar led a five member Sri Lankan delegation to the 2002 Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which commenced in Marrakesh, Morocco on September 23. The Membership of the International Telecommunication Union is 189 countries. Around 2000 delegates are participating in this four-yearly Plenipotentiary Conference which will end on October 18. At this Plenipotentiary the work of the ITU during the previous four years and Policies and Plans for the next four years are taken up. The elections to the Governing Body of the ITU and the Council takes place during this period. The Financial Budget of the ITU for the past four years and for the next four years are discussed and approved with amendments as necessary. At the Plenary Sessions, most heads of delegations address the meeting very briefly owing to constraints of time. Minister Imthiaz Bakeer-Markar stressed on the need to-set-up a special fund to assist developing and war-affected countries, in their telecommunication infrastructures to afford universal access to the world and to bridge the information and digital divide. The Minister made use of the opportunity to have one to one discussions with Ministers of Media, Posts and Telecommunications of other countries and ambassadors, on matters of mutual interest. |
