Mitsui OSK Lines Japan (MOL), the largest global carrier with 910 vessels has ordered a new fleet of sixteen in a bid to further fortify the global container operations.

Many of the sixteen have been delivered in April 2002, Mitsui OSK Lines Lanka (Pvt) Ltd's Managing Director Dilrukshan Tillekeratne told the Daily News yesterday.

Mitsui OSK Lines Lanka (Pvt) Ltd which is the 26th overseas subsidiary of Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan, completed one year of operation on October 1.

Founded in 1884, Mitsui OSK Lines Japan (MOL) operates the world's biggest fleet of 910 vessels aggregating the maximum tonnage of 44 M DWT and stretching from container ships to tramp vessels and special cargo carriers for items like Iron ore, Cole, Wood chips, Crude oil, LNG, Chemicals and Automobiles.

MOL has always been to the forefront of new developments in shipping and the groups total logistics service links sea, air and land transport, warehousing and distribution. The company launched its first specialised car carrier in 1965 and today handles some 23% of all cars shipped around the world.

MOL launched the virtual liner company (VLC) as a part of its Liner business organisation officially in April 2000. The VLC was formed to improve performance and cost competitiveness by getting every one to move in the same direction.

The basic concept behind VLC is to get all routes working towards the same goal, rather than operating separately in North America, Europe, Asia, Oceania, South America and Africa.

The functions of MOL Lanka includes sales, marketing, vessel husbanding, documentation, equipment control and most importantly making feeder arrangements to and from the port of Colombo, which is gaining recognition as the main hub port in the Indian Ocean.

MOL Lanka handles 12 - 13 MOL operated vessels monthly and a total of 30 - 32 vessels monthly with other TNWA partners. MOL operates services to and from Colombo on its West Africa - Far East (WA1 & WA2), Far East - East Africa (EAX West Bound and EAX - East Bound) and the Karachi Express (KEX), in addition to the AEX East Bound and CEX West Bound services which are operated together with APL and Hyundai under the new World Alliance. They also have a car carrier calling Colombo on a monthly basis.
