Norwegian envoy calls all to support peace process

P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

Norway has been a negotiator for the peace process for several years and its role has been to bring conflicting parties together for a peaceful solution, said Norwegian Consul in Sri Lanka Tor Kubberud.

More consultations will be held and hopefully further progress will be made. It is important for most groups in the country to back the peace process. Norway and other donor countries will continue as partners in the country's development perspective, he said.

Kubberud was speaking at the 10th anniversary of the Plantation Housing and Social Welfare Trust in Nuwara Eliya Region at the 'Savumia Kalai Arangam' of Holy Trinity Tamil National College Auditorium.

Thousands of plantation sector personnel involved in the Welfare Measures of the Trust were present.

The Consul said the Norwegian and Netherlands Governments have assisted in funding for the trust's activities in the plantation districts and were partners in development programmes.

Kubberud said most newspapers report about the need for development work in the North and East.

He said the needs in those parts were great. Development projects were also needed in the south and other parts. The Norwegian Government will continue support to the Southern province and the plantation areas.

The envoy said the Norwegian government was supporting Sri Lanka's development efforts in many sectors, including development programs in the rural areas of Hambantota, Moneragala and Batticaloa which will be continued.

He said the Trust and its partners can be proud of the achievements in improving the living and working standards of the plantation community over the last decade.

S. Kamalanathan, Regional Director of the Trust, said it was 10 years ago, they emerged almost from zero, and together with the experience gained from the Social Development divisions of the Janatha Estates Development Board and the Sri Lanka State Plantation Corporation, they progressed in their mission to enhance the quality of life of the plantation community.

Regional Directors of the Trust from other districts and management company directors were also present.
