by Sarath Malalasekera Appeal Court Judge Justice Shirani Tillekewardane commended Criminal Investigation Department officials for assisting the Army to track a soldier evading arrest for several years without passing the Rs. 100,000 compensation granted by the Court of Appeal to a petitioner in a Habeas Corpus application. Tillekewardane observed that K.M.D. Gamini of Kalutara was ordered to pay Rs. 100,000 to Lenaduwa Kankanamage Martin of Kalutara in April 2000. The incident had occurred in 1992. Since the compensation had not been paid, Tillekewardane issued a warrant on August 8, 2002 for Gamini's arrest. A copy of the warrant was issued to the HQI Kalutara and also to the Director CID. The Director CID deployed a special team headed by SP Asoka Galgamuwa, Chief Inspector Senaka Kumarasinghe, OIC, CID and RSI Sunil Priyantha to arrest the soldier. Within a few days, the CID with Military Police arrested Gamini and produced him before Justice Tillekewardane. Justice Tillekewardane handed over the suspect to Military Police and ordered him to be produced before the Court of Appeal on September 30. |
