by Uditha Kumarasinghe Emphasis was laid on sustainable development of agriculture in Sri Lanka and the increase in productivity of agriculture crops at the Annual Symposium of the Department of Agriculture (ASDA) at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Gannoruwa on September 26 and 27. The symposium, the largest gathering of agricultural professionals in the country, provided an ideal forum for agriculturists, scientists, academics, entrepreneurs, policy makers and administrators to interact and share experience for mutual benefit and for the common goal-sustainable development of agriculture in Sri Lanka, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. He said agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister S. B. Dissanayake inaugurated the symposium while the keynote address was delivered by Dr.Emile Frison, Director of the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP), France. The spokesman said during the symposium's technical sessions, 46 research papers were presented and discussions were held on to the 46 priority research areas. Special attention was focused on ways and means to introduce these new experiments to farmers. Meanwhile, the symposium also gave priority to several key areas such as paddy cultivation, soil science, plant protection and horticulture development. Awards were presented to the best scientist of the year including the best young scientist and three other outstanding non-research agriculturists for 2002. Dr. Sumith Abeysiriwardene was awarded the best scientist who researched on hybrid paddy development programme which aims to increase the paddy crop from 20 to 30 per cent. A poster session and a display of various creations related to "Agriculture" by the Department of Agriculture and leading private sector organisations involved in information technology was also held the department also launched a document named Annals of the Sri Lanka Department of Agriculture. |
