by Uditha Kumarasinghe Cracks have surfaced on the Kantale tank bund which could lead to a disaster similar to that which occurred 15 years ago when the bund collapsed resulting in massive flooding. The Farmer Organisation in Kantale has already informed of this imminent danger to the Irrigation Ministry and the Department of Agrarian Services, informed sources told the Daily News yesterday. They have complained to the authorities that transport of heavy vehicles at high speed was the main reason for the damage to the tank bund. Sources said despite the Road Development Authority prohibiting the travel of heavy vehicles across this bund, that warning has gone unheeded. The Kantale tank provides water to nearly 18,560 acres of paddy lands in the area while 7,500 farmer families are directly dependent on this tank. At present 114,000 acre feet of water is stored in the Kantale tank. |
