Five new Security Council members elected UNITED NATIONS, Sept 27 (AFP) The United Nations General Assembly elected Angola, Chile, Germany, Pakistan and Spain on Friday to serve on the 15-member UN Security Council for two years from January 1. The five were candidates chosen in advance by their regional groups: Africa, Asia, Latin America and Western Europe and were expected to be unopposed. But, announcing the result of the secret ballot, Assembly president Jan Kavan said that while Pakistan had received 172 votes, a single vote had also been cast for India. The new members will replace Colombia, Ireland, Mauritius, Norway and Singapore, which leave the council on December 31. The council also includes five permanent members -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- and five other elected members, one of them representing Eastern Europe. Bulgaria, Cameroon, Guinea, Mexico and Syria were elected last year until the end of 2003. |
