National Remembrance Park for War Heroes

by Ranil Wijayapala

The National Remembrance Park, a park dedicated for war heroes from the time of independence will be ceremonially dedicated on October 3, with the participation of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Ministers and the Commanders of three Armed Forces and Police.

The National Remembrance Park, a project sponsored by the Ceylon Tobacco Company with the participation of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, the Mahaweli Authority, the three Armed Forces and the Police will give a chance for the relatives of the war heroes killed and missing in action to remember them.

CTC Chairman Lt. General Dennis Perera told a press conference on Wednesday that the National Remembrance Park was established in Mailapitiya, 15 kilometres from Kandy on the Raja Mawatha, on a request by President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

The Remembrance park will not be a cometary where the ashes of those who killed in action is buried but a park in remembrance of those who dedicated their lives for the defence of their motherland.

The Remembrance Park will include a monument where three stainless steel pipes ascend to the skies to join the apex, depicting the gratitude of the entire nation for those missing or killed in action.

The names of over 22,000 Armed Forces and Police personnel will be tattooed in separate monuments, allocated to 13 regiments of the Sri Lanka Army and the Navy, Air Force and the Police.

The CTC also embarked on a project to feed the details of over 22,000 Armed Forces and Police personnel who have sacrificed their lives for the defence of the country into a website (Remembrancepark.ctc.lk) to coincide with the dedication of the National Remembrance Park.

At the second stage of the project the details of the disabled personnel will be fed into the web-site featuring their talents to gain job opportunities etc.

The Remembrance Park will also feature and information centre with four shops run by disabled servicemen, while three houses have been built in the area for disabled servicemen and their families looking after the park.

The Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority Dr. Narme Wickremasinghe said that the theme of the park will be 'peace and life' in honour of the persons who died.

The National Remembrance Park will be opened for the public after its ceremonial dedication on October 3. It will be open to the public during day time to remember their relatives.
