by Rajmi Manatunga The Sarvodaya Movement recently expanded its social and welfare service to the urban community by setting up a community centre in the Colombo city. The new centre in Borella which is equipped with all modern facilities has been built under the 'City Awakening Program' (Nagarodaya) of the movement and was inaugurated last Wednesday by Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardene. Addressing the gathering, Sarvodaya Chairman Dr. A.T Ariyaratne said that though the movement was founded 44 years ago Sarvodaya was not very close to the urban community as they always gave prominence to rural development. "However our Urban Development program existed from the beginning and we launched Nagarodaya in Colombo schools in 1970. Through the new community centre we hope to provide welfare services to the people and education to the children of the area," he added. The new Nagarodaya building which has been constructed in a state land provided by former President R. Premadasa consists of a branch of the Global Network of Religion for Children, a computer institute which will provide free computer education to children and a health information centre. Former Colombo Mayor Omar Khameel, Director of Miyochikai Organisation in Japan Masaki Hama and Sarvodaya Executive Director Dr Vinya Ariyaratne were present. |
