by Nadira Gunatilleke The National Children's Festival 2002 will be held on Universal Children's Day, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7 on October 1 at 11.00 am. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Interior Minister John Amaratunga and Women's Affairs Minister Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake will participate, National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) Chairman will participate, Prof. Harendra de Silva said. The theme of this year's festival is Hinsanayen Thora Lama Lowak (A children's world without harm). Children from different provinces will speak. Several school dramas will be staged by School Child Protection Committee children. The festival is sponsored by UNICEF and organised by the NCPA. Several other events have also been organised to mark the Children's Day. Ministers Amaratunga and Ratnayake will open the special "Child Protection Police Unit" at the NCPA Headquarters, Sri Jayawardenepura at 4.00 pm. A new stamp and first day cover will also be issued. The stamp and the first day cover have been designed by winners of the All Island Children's Art Competition organised by the NCPA. Madara Madubhashini Suddhanada of Sujatha Primary School, Matara designed the stamp while M.W.K. Nimal Shantha of Kahawatta Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Ratnapura designed the first day cover. |
