Seven foreign nationals with Saudi-funded NGO arrested in Bangladesh DHAKA, Sept 25 (AFP) - Seven foreign nationals from north Africa and the Middle East working for a Saudi-funded non-governmental organisation in Bangladesh were being quizzed Wednesday by Bangladeshi intelligence officers, police said. "They were arrested Monday night and the court granted four days to grill them," said one police officer, who declined to elaborate on the reasons for the detentions. Newspapers here speculated the group was being questioned either because they are involved in the smuggling of women and children or because they are suspected of belonging to a terrorist group. The seven are from Algeria, Libya, Yemen and Sudan and reportedly worked for Saudi Arabian-funded NGO Al-Hermein, press reports said. They were arrested Monday night at their offices in the Uttara suburb of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka. Reports said police seized computers and some papers during the raid on the office. |
