Labour Department to deploy 20 more officials to nab errant employers By Ananda Kannangara The Labour Department will deploy 20 additional labour officials to nab employers who violate labour regulations and avoid sending Employees Provident Fund (EPF) remittances to the Central Bank, a Labour Department source told the Daily News yesterday. "A recent survey revealed that owners of nearly 5000 large and medium scale business enterprises are still slipping the labour nets without sending remittances of their employees," he said. "If no precautionary measures are taken to nab such errant employers, both the Government and workers will face hardships," the source said. The Labour Department had collected nearly Rs. 175 million from errant employees during the first six months of this year. "During a raid at a medium scale business institution at Bambalapitiya we found that the EPF deducted from employees' salaries were misused by the owner without sending the money to the Central Bank," the source said. "In another incident, a personnel manager of a large printing institution in the Greater Colombo Area had found that his EPF money deducted from his salary over two years had not been remitted to the Central Bank," he said. "He had known about it, when he applied for a housing loan from his EPF fund at the Central Bank," the source said. "Considering these incidents, we understand that a large number of mercantile institutions still violate labour rules", he added. |
