By Ananda Kannangara Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a large gathering at the Colombo University last evening appealed to the University authorities to nominate at least one member of the Alumni Association to the University Council in order to carry out future development activities. "Even developed countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States highly appreciate the services rendered by past university students and appoint some of them to the University councils with the objective of seeking more assistance to develop their institutions for the benefit of future students," Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said. The Prime Minister made these observations at a ceremony held at the Colombo University to coincide with the opening of the "Sarasavi Mela" trade exhibition and funfair organised by the Alumni Association of the Colombo University. The Prime Minister also observed the University officials that even development activities in schools are carried out with the help of School Development Councils of which teachers and past pupils are members. Recalling his days as a student of the Colombo University, he said students have organised events like Sarasavi Mela to collect funds for various projects. He thanked the organisers of "Sarasavi Mela" for their endeavour. Organising Committee Chairman Thilak Karunaratne thanked the Prime Minister for his presence. The Prime Minister's name will be added to the University's history as he is the first graduate of the Colombo University to rise to this exalted position. He said that university activities can be developed not only with the help of the Government but also with private sector participation. He requested the Private sector to help develop the universities. Vice Chancellor Prof. Thilak Hettiaratchchi also spoke. |
