Indian fishermen held in Pesalai

by Ranil Wijayapala

Fishermen in Pesalai, Mannar had held 105 Indian fishermen and 24 fishing boats in village in Pesalai on Wednesday night, Defence sources said yesterday.

The incident had occurred on Wednesday night around 10.30. The Mannar Divisional Secretary and members of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) rushed there soon afterwards.

The Indian fishermen have been held by the local fishermen in the general sea off Pesalai, about 15 Km northwest of Mannar. They have demanded the arrival of the Indian High Commissioner and the Defence Secretary for the release of the fishermen.

The local fishermen have alleged that their livelihood is affected by Indian fishermen who poach in the region.

Defence Secretary Austin Fernando said he was briefed on the incident on Wednesday night.

He said he has instructed an Additional Secretary to the Defence Ministry to look into to the matter and settle the dispute.

A delegation from the Indian High Commission also reportedly visited Mannar yesterday to look in to the matter, the sources added.
