Rehabilitation programme

By Nadira Gunatilleke

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) in collaboration with the Department of Probation and Child Care under the Ministry of Social Welfare will introduce a new programme to rehabilitate children who have been subject to trafficking. The International Labour Organisation will allocate US$ 70,000 for the project, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Viji Jegarasasingam told the Daily News yesterday.

She said 200 physically, emotionally and sexually abused children will be admitted to the rehabilitation centre at Paratta, Panadura. Care will be provided over three to six months. The centre is equipped with play therapy rooms, a recreational area, a vocational training unit and a non-formal education unit. In addition, a post rehabilitation programme will be developed to re-integrate the child into his or her community, Jegarasasingtm said.

The approach contains confidence-building measures in the first stabilising period, re-establishing trustworthy human relationships, development of individual action plans enhancing the possibility for sustainable rehabilitation of each child/youth, developing the economic potential and economical independence, developing life scenarios for post rehabilitation, establishing support networks/live-in collectives among youth, involvement of families before reunion take place and finding alternatives to family reunion such as foster parenting, she added.

Workers at the centre have been trained in psycho-social counselling.
