by Ananda Kannangara A programme to veer schoolchildren away from private tuition classes on Full Moon Poya days will be initiated by the Buddha Sasana Ministry. Under this programme, Ministry officials are expected to visit Dhamma schools and request children to refrain from attending tuition classes on Full Moon Poya days. "The decision was taken in response to a large number of complaints received by us on tuition classes on Poya days," Buddha Sasana Ministry Commissioner H. W. D. Sunil told the Daily News yesterday. "However there is no legal authority to ban or institute rules and regulations to stop functioning classes on Full Moon Poya Days. Creating an awareness among children on this matter is very important," Sunil said. He said conducting classes on Poya days will hamper religious activities. Private classes are mostly conducted on Poya days in urban areas. He said written and verbal complaints have been received by the Ministry on classes conducted in temples on Poya days. It is reported that Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Nugegoda, Maharagama and Kohuwela are the most affected areas, with many private classes being conducted on Poya days. |
