FWC to grow trees with Caltex

The Federation of Wild Life Conservation (FWC) is carrying out its planned environmental activities supported by Caltex for the current year, the tree planting project at bare or abandoned lands within the city and suburbs city centers commenced recently.

The FWC in their project objective will endeavour to improve the percentage of green foliage within the western province, providing unpolluted air to the community and protection of the biodiversity and direction. All in all, the entire project will help to reduce air pollution in the city limits.

The concept of growing trees at vacant and available land at many of the traffic interceptions is not new. But bare land put to good use by making the city look more beautiful whilst not harming the environment will be a pleasant sight to any passer by.

Also it will provide more shade to the concrete zone we live in and provide shelter for birds as well. Trees such as Kohomba (Azadirahta Indika), Mango (Mangifera Indika), Phimbiya (Filicium Decipiens), Kela (Butea Monosperma), Sooriya (Thespesia Populnea), Domba (Calophllum Inophyllum) etc has been planted at Baseline Rd.

The initial preparation of the land, planting the trees, treating them with fertilizer and caring for the trees will be done by the FWC. Even though an environment with various side effects affects urban areas, we hope that with proper management and maintenance, destructions to the plants can be minimized and timely action can be taken to care for the trees to ensure the program is successful.

Caltex on the other hand has had a long relationship with the FWC for almost 3 years working very closely in spreading the message of protecting our environment for our future generations. The awareness programs among schoolchildren and the general public will continue to take center stage, in the long list of activities planned to be carried out within this year.

Even though there is awareness among the community who knows that the environment needs to be looked after, very little action is being taken at the point of implementation by individuals.

Hence the continuity in the awareness activities will take a new look in talking about our fauna and flora. Schoolchildren will be exposed to many of the working sessions of the FWC, which will be an islandwide activity.

Apart from the above other projects targeted in protecting our National Parks talking to visitors and children on the parks facilities, its extent, the trees and the animals, the 'do' and the don'ts etc will be communicated with attractive sign boards at key points. We will strive to in build the habit of "taking nothing but pictures and leaving nothing but foot prints".

The concept of boards will also be extended to the Botanical Gardens as well and many papers will be published on the importance of Biodiversity as well.
