One killed in fresh clashes in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD, India, Wednesday (AFP) Hindu-Muslim violence broke out Tuesday in India's western state of Gujarat for the first time in more than a month, leaving one dead and at least 13 injured in mob violence, police said.

Authorities said the clashes were sparked when a Muslim motorcyclist hit a Hindu boy late Monday in the town of Borsad in Anand district, 70 kilometers (42 miles) east of Gujarat's commercial capital Ahmedabad.

"The police controlled the crowd that night but the fresh violence broke out (Tuesday) morning when some shops were burned," said M.D. Patel, a police spokesman.

Patel said at least four others were injured in stone-pelting by the mob and a stabbing. Six policemen were also hurt.

An indefinite curfew was imposed on the town from 10:15 am (0445 GMT).

It was the first major communal incident reported in Gujarat since July 30.
