M. E. Marikar

Today is the 4th death anniversary of veteran sportsman, sports journalist and promoter M. E. Marikar, who was one of the famous writers. He was well known among his friends as Mariks. He was a popular man in the hills - there was no one who didn't know him.

As a writer for the Times Group and then for the Sunday Times, the enterprising Mariks built widespread contacts and relationships not only in the field of sports, but also in Politics, Social work and areas such as travel and tourism. Among his friends were top sports personalities, political figures, top police officers and public servants.

Mariks was a top class sportsman, he excelled in many sports for his school St. Sylvester's. He was a soccerite, hockey player, an athlete and a boxer who participated in the Stubs Shield meets. He was also a cadet. He was the first Sylvestrian to play Premier League Cricket. He was a top class medium paceman at that time. He bowled for the Moors SC, Kandy Lake Club, Kandy SC, Central Province, Up-Country, Times of Ceylon, Army SC, All Ceylon Press XI. Later he was a top notch cricket umpire and football referee.

Mariks was a strapping figure, he was easily spotted by friends and media colleagues at any function be it sports or any other public event.

The services he rendered for sportsmen and for the public in Kandy still stands as the best. No sportsman should forget his service, what he has given for sports. His good work is continued by his nephew Hafiz Marikar a city father and a well known figure in Kandy. He is also a good sports writer and a promoter.

Mariks is no more but will continue to be alive in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Marikar was a household word where sports and news in the hill capital was concerned. He was a outstanding gentleman and a highly respected person.

I had the great privilege to have associated with Mariks. Hospitality abounded in him, while love overflowed from his large heart. Good bye Mariks, we still remember you. (G P)
