Matale Zahirians - under 15 hockey champions

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent

Zahira College, Matale, scored an overwhelming 4 - 0 win over Isipatana College, Colombo, to become champions at the All Island schools under 15 boys hockey championship organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association in the finals played at Police grounds, Kandy. At half time Zahirians led 1 - 0.

Playing fast and constructive hockey, the Zahirians after a fairly subdued first half in which they were able to sound the boards just once, cut loose in the last quarter of the match to snap up three more to romp home easy winners. Isipatana on the other hand had no answer to the power play of the Zahirians and did well to put up a strong for the major part of the game but they cracked up in the closing games as their opponents found the openings to go on a goal spree. Zahirians obtained their goals through skipper and right Inside Mohammed Azam (1), centre half S. H. M. Faleel (1), centre Forward K. Rosmin (1) and left extreme Mohamed Ramzan (1).

Before the commencement of the match both teams were introduced to the Chief Guest Maurice Perera, President of the Central Province Rugby Football Union and Senior Vice President of the Kandy Football League.

Zahirians dominated this tournament to such an extent that they scored 35 goals and their defence was never breached. In the semi finals Isipatana College edged out Nalanda College 3-2 on penalty strokes with the match itself ending in a scoreless draw. But the other semi final appeared to be a one sided affair with Zahira College triumphing over home town rivals Christ Church College, Matale by the big margin of 5 - 0. M. Zaffrullah, M. Rosmin, M. Azam, M. Amjad and M. Ramzan scoring a goal each.

Nalanda won the losers final beating Christ Church College 2 - 0 with Hiran Senaviratne and S. M. Abeynaike doing the scoring.

The finals was umpired by S. S. Jayasinghe and Indika Jayawardena.
