Where's Greig? ask cricket fans by Elmo Rodrigopulle Where's Tony Greig, and why isn't he doing the TV commentaries? That's the question posed to us by our readers and which is also the question asked wherever cricket fans gather. Greig, the former England captain has been synonymous with Sri Lanka and its cricket and has given a big boost to the game and its tourism here with his indepth and knowledgeable comments. He has always been a keen supporter of Sri Lankan cricket and has done everything in his endeavour to promote the cricketer and the game. When he is behind the mike, he keeps viewers and listeners spellbound with his melodious voice and description of the happenings out in the middle. When he is on air, he makes viewers and listeners feel as they are at the scene of the action. But cricketers and cricket fans are disappointed that Greig is not behind the mike describing the play in the on going International Cricket Council mini World Cup tourney. From what we gather Greig apparently is tied up with some other TV network and that probably is the reason why he is not on TV here. True, the other commentators doing the local TV commentaries are doing a good job. But Greig has been a household name here in Sri Lanka and everyone is hoping that Greig will make every endeavour to please his fans here by at least doing his thing from now or at least from the semi-final stage onward. Greig has the ability to bring alive a game with his superb description. So it is everyone's hope that Greig will not let his numerous supporters down. |
