Canada to help in de-mining by N.M. Ameen in New York Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham pledged full canadian support for de-mining activities in the North. Graham met visiting Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in New York on Tuesday September 17. During the meeting Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and the Canadian Foreign Minister discussed the on-going peace process and the urgently needed development activities in the North and East at length. Graham has told the Premier that Canada may even raise a special fund for de-mining activities with contributions from the Canadian public. Canada was also keen to share its expertise and experience in de-mining activities with Sri Lanka, he has told the Premier during their discussions. Examples Sri Lanka could draw from Canada regarding constitutional and legal changes necessary to strengthen democracy also gained the attention of both parties during the meeting. Interior Minister John Amaratunga, Minister Assisting Foreign Affairs Lal Dharmapriya Gamage, Secretary to the Prime Minister Bradman Weerakoon, Policy Development and Implementation Ministry Secretary R. Paskaralingam and Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative in the UN, Charlie Mahendran were also present with the Prime Minister during the meeting. |
