PM got mandate for peace process, says SB

by Kegalle special correspondent

The economy of the country deteriorated to an alarming extent during the period of the previous regime, owing to financial mismanagement, said Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi S.B. Dissanayake at a meeting held at Kegalle Town Hall, recently.

He was presenting "Nana Nuwana" scholarships to 170 eligible students selected from various schools in the Sabaragamuwa province from the Samurdhi families.

Minister Dissanayake said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe received a mandate from the masses of this country in the last general election and in the local government elections as well to redeem this country from the grips of the distructive and disastrous ethnic conflict and to bring lasting peace, development and prosperity to this land. Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in her capacity as President is all out to consolidate her position and power and places obstacles in the path to peace and prosperity of the government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. He said since assuming reins of government, in a short time, the government of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe has brought about 3.5 percent increase in the growth rate which was below zero, at the time of his taking over the administration. Though the economy was ruined by the past regime, we are providing and continuing with poverty alleviation grants.

Samurdhi Minister and Kegalle district parliamentarian R.A.D. Sirisena said, that actually, only 12 per cent of the population need Samurdhi grants, but today, 50 per cent of the people are obtaining Samurdhi allowances in an unjustifiable manner and that this situation is being corrected.

Wayamba Development Minister Jayatilake Podinilame said that all must form good habits and refrain from evil, for both the good and welfare of themselves and society as a whole, and that everybody should save something from what they get for the betterment and welfare of their respective families.
